From 28 August to 5 September, Düsseldorf played host to the Caravan Salon, a trade fair that brings together the best of the caravanning sector each year. It was an excellent opportunity to meet partners and clients, and to observe first-hand the evolution of one of the most interesting supply chains for our panels.
The 2026 edition confirmed the importance of this event, with more than 259,000 visitors from 41 countries and 834 exhibitors setting an all-time record, filling fifteen halls with vehicles, fit-outs and ideas. However, behind the figures, there is also a cautious market. Following years of significant growth, new registrations in Germany decreased by 3% during the first seven months of 2026, whereas across Europe the figure remained relatively stable. Sellers are more cautious and buyers are more discerning, but the desire to travel and spend time outdoors remains strong.
The most concrete theme to emerge at the fair was sustainability. EU Regulation 2023/1464 sets stricter limits on formaldehyde emissions, which will apply to furniture and wood-based panels from August 2026. From August 2027, these limits will also apply to vehicle interiors, including caravans. There is growing demand for formaldehyde-free products, which differ from low-emission products in that they require specific adhesives that contain no formaldehyde. This presents a serious challenge for panel manufacturers, but it also clearly indicates the direction in which they should work.
Wood-based panels are used for everything in a motorhome or caravan, from furniture and interior fittings to wall linings, worktops and lightweight structures. We supply poplar plywood and multi-ply panels to other companies, which then finish or face them before assembling them into fit-outs.
Poplar multi-ply is one of the lightest panels with the required performance characteristics. It provides the stability needed for vehicles that experience temperature and humidity swings, and it offers a smooth, even surface that is ideal for finishing.
At the salon, we also noticed a growing interest in timber construction, particularly for small garden cabins and bungalows. In this area, a reliable panel can significantly impact strength and insulating properties. We are monitoring it closely.
